The ability to interact with your customers in real time and react to situations instantaneously, is extremely powerful. This can come in useful in many ways, whether it's solving a customer service issue, reacting to a news event or even dealing with a negative experience. The fact that any company can now respond to these events with such speed and efficiency is something any business can do and every business should use.

Social media gives you an unprecedented look inside the lives of your customers. And it's all done without some covert surveillance or hack. The online world of social media is an arena in which people freely share their likes and dislikes, affiliations, and their reactions and feelings toward a myriad of topics (we will come back to this soon.) But you as a business owner can now take these insights and adjust your communication to appeal better to your audience. Of course you are never going to please everyone, but it will give you a better understanding than ever before.

In the last point we mentioned your customers instant reactions. There is a further opportunity here that used to cost companies huge budgets market testing. Social Media allows you to instantly gauge the reaction to a potential new product, service or direction. You can run quick comparisons and get invaluable feedback from your consumers. These reactions are by no means the be all and end all, but it can help prevent a costly error, that before this medium, would not have been possible to know. This process can also help realize a need your audience has, that you didn't even know existed. Quick and free feedback and opinions, without investing too deep into your new concept.

4. Empowering Your Advocates

Brand advocates have always existed, and have always been a focus for marketing efforts. Social media just makes this process so much easier. Your advocates are your biggest fans; they are going to spread the word about you and will be in your corner. If you nurture them and feed them the message you want other people to hear; they are going to gladly and efficiently shout it from the rooftops. In today's market place, customer reviews and feedback is a high value asset and will become a huge sway for your potential clients. This factor alone is reason enough to be on social platforms.

5. A Level Playing Field

The ultimate appeal of Social Media in the scope of online marketing is that for all intents and purposes, it is a level playing field. You can spar with the heavy weights in this arena. We cannot all buy TV spots or billboards; we can't all sponsor sports teams or get a celebrity spokes person. But with digital marketing, there is a strong organic process that demands the cream rises to the top. This is not to say a big budget will not have sway here, it does; but its skill and authenticity that will be the marker for success. In this area we rely on customer interaction and so you can rise and fall quickly. It's also fair to say that anyone can do it. You don't have to be an artist or a photographer or director; you just need to spend time and effort. These platforms are free and should be used. As with any field there are experts who will be able to help you achieve greater levels of success, but there is no excuse not to be involved in some shape or form.
