Secure Your Email

Your Internet security starts with you!

By now, either personally or through a friend or co-worker, you have probably learned that it's way too easy to be compromised by a hacker or get a virus or acquire popup ads that seem to take over your computer. The range of exploitation can be as benign as someone constantly feeding you annoying advertising content that you don't want or as serious as personal identity theft, credit card fraud or ransomware.

STARTTLS

One thing you can do to help yourself out is to make a secure connection between your email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc) and your email server (your ISP or mail host) so that your password is not passed across the Internet in plain text, but rather is encrypted. A recent study by Facebook found that only 30% of email connections are secured using SSL encryption. This is unfortunate because it is easily done by using a built in SSL connection like STARTTLS. You can quickly find a setting for this in your mail account settings, but the secret to success is using the correct mail server. If your mail is hosted with 111 Web Studio, you should use mail.icglink.com for both your incoming and outgoing servers if you want to use SSL or STARTTLS. While you can use your own domain and still send and receive email (like mail.whatever.com), you can't use that and generate an encrypted connection. The reason is that our clients enjoy a free SSL certificate for the server called mail.icglink.com, but unless you have asked us to purchase one for you, there will be no certificate for mail.yourdomain.com. Both server names point to the same mail server, so either will work, but only mail.icglink.com will work with TLS SSL security.

Don't Click!

If you didn't expect an email that's in your in-box, don't click on that link and don't open that attachment. Even if it seems potentially legitimate like a USPS or UPS shipping notice for a package you didn't know was coming or an attached invoice for a service you can't remember purchasing, don't click! If you are wondering about a link, you can usually hover your mouse over it and see where it really goes. If it's not going to the same place the link says it's going, then you should question it. You can always visit a link without clicking, by typing the URL into a browser. But beware - if the URL ends in .php or .exe or if it's a domain you don't know, there is a very good chance you are asking for trouble by going there, even if you type it in to your browser.

Spam & Virus Filtering

Another good practice is to use a spam and virus filter. All our client mail is filtered through our spam111 virus and basic spam filtering, but if you want additional protection, our advanced spam111 service offers such features as adjustable settings, a quarantine, whitelist and blacklist, POP service for filtering third party mail and more. As an alternative, you can also use filters built into your email client to help manage your incoming mail more easily. And you can find third party spam filters that you can attach to your mail client.
