Secure Your Email
Your Internet security starts with you!
By now, either personally or through a friend or co-worker, you have probably learned that it's way too easy to be compromised by a hacker or get a virus or acquire popup ads that seem to take over your computer. The range of exploitation can be as benign as someone constantly feeding you annoying advertising content that you don't want or as serious as personal identity theft, credit card fraud or ransomware.
One thing you can do to help yourself out is to make a secure connection between your email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc) and your email server (your ISP or mail host) so that your password is not passed across the Internet in plain text, but rather is encrypted. A recent study by Facebook found that only 30% of email connections are secured using SSL encryption. This is unfortunate because it is easily done by using a built in SSL connection like STARTTLS. You can quickly find a setting for this in your mail account settings, but the secret to success is using the correct mail server. If your mail is hosted with 111 Web Studio, you should use mail.icglink.com for both your incoming and outgoing servers if you want to use SSL or STARTTLS. While you can use your own domain and still send and receive email (like mail.whatever.com), you can't use that and generate an encrypted connection. The reason is that our clients enjoy a free SSL certificate for the server called mail.icglink.com, but unless you have asked us to purchase one for you, there will be no certificate for mail.yourdomain.com. Both server names point to the same mail server, so either will work, but only mail.icglink.com will work with TLS SSL security.
If you didn't expect an email that's in your in-box, don't click on that link and don't open that attachment. Even if it seems potentially legitimate like a USPS or UPS shipping notice for a package you didn't know was coming or an attached invoice for a service you can't remember purchasing, don't click! If you are wondering about a link, you can usually hover your mouse over it and see where it really goes. If it's not going to the same place the link says it's going, then you should question it. You can always visit a link without clicking, by typing the URL into a browser. But beware - if the URL ends in .php or .exe or if it's a domain you don't know, there is a very good chance you are asking for trouble by going there, even if you type it in to your browser.
Spam & Virus Filtering
Another good practice is to use a spam and virus filter. All our client mail is filtered through our spam111 virus and basic spam filtering, but if you want additional protection, our advanced spam111 service offers such features as adjustable settings, a quarantine, whitelist and blacklist, POP service for filtering third party mail and more. As an alternative, you can also use filters built into your email client to help manage your incoming mail more easily. And you can find third party spam filters that you can attach to your mail client.

Web Hosting Options
One of the nice things about operating our own servers and hosting systems is that we can offer web hosting options to fit every need from basic Linux virtual hosting to hosting inside our Build111 content management system (CMS) to virtual private servers (VPS) where you can run any operating system or application you may need.
Our robust Linux virtual hosting offers PHP or ColdFusion and MySQL so you can run third party applications like Drupal or WordPress or write custom applications from scratch. Built in server statistics are included with every web site so you can keep up with your traffic.
Our advanced Build111 and Church111 content management systems are feature rich and easy to use. We include training with every 111 site. You can use one of the included free templates or we can create any custom design you might imagine.
VPS and Cloud Hosting
If you have a specialized application or need Windows, Rails or other web hosting, our VPS solution is reasonable and flexible. We can provide Microsoft licenses as well so you can run any of their applications on your server.
Our private cloud spans two data centers with a different bandwidth provider supplying each one and a third supplier connecting the two. We have an edge router at each data center, redundant core routers, route servers and switches with an N+1 ESXi VMWare stack over our SAN at each data center for maximum reliability.
If you have any questions about these or other services offered by 111 Web Studio, please give us a call at (877) 397-7605 or contact us.

Get Your Head in the Clouds
You have probably heard about "the cloud" and wondered what it is and how it might be useful to you. If you're in the "What's the Cloud?" crowd, wonder no longer. At 111 Web Studio, we can provide cloud services or just clear up the clouds for you.
Simply put, the cloud is a euphemism for all the various services you will find on the Internet. More recently, it tends to refer to services that used to be supplied by local hardware - office servers for instance. Today, many businesses can achieve off-site backup, redundancy and access to their server from multiple locations most easily by putting their server in the cloud. All this means is that instead of a piece of hardware being in your office, it's in a data center somewhere. Don't get confused when you hear about such things as virtual servers or VPS. All this means is that your server shares hardware resources like memory and CPU with other servers. It all ends up being hardware someplace and it's all your own. Virtualization just means that your physical server's resources are shared with other folks to make the most of those hardware resources.
If you have any questions or if you'd like to get your office server in the cloud, please contact us or give us a call at (877) 397-7605 and we'll be happy to chat with you about the possibilities.

What the Heck is Custom Webware
You may have noticed the intriguing and clever tagline on 111 Web Studio: "High Design and Custom Webware since 1995" and wondered casually what those guys might be trying to tell you. Well, wonder no longer!
Hopefully, we have caught your imagination with the idea of High Design. With the huge and growing volume of content on the web, you need a way to be remembered. With 19 years of experience, we have the history to know what's been done and the insight to know what's coming up in the web design world. With our emphasis on High Design, we'll keep you on the cutting edge so you can stand apart from the teeming masses!
The meaning of Custom Webware on the other hand may give you pause... but pause no longer... Ever since we started in 1995, we have been programming custom online software solutions to meet the special needs of customers. This might be an online order management system, a bank account analysis tool, a student/tutor management system, a custom event registration system, a customer follow up system, a purpose built calculator, an interface between your website and off-line systems or a myriad of other solutions. The common thread is that none of this online software can be found on-the-shelf and custom online software must be built from the ground up to accomplish the goal. Our custom webware programmers can make your dreams into reality.
If you have a unique idea that is not readily accomplished with available online solutions, give us a call at (877) 397-7605 or contact 111 Web Studio for more information.

IE Security Vulnerability
These warnings are becoming all too frequent lately, but here's another one for you. Microsoft announced this week a vulnerability in all versions of their IE web browser. If you use Internet Explorer, you must now be even more careful than normal not to click on anything that might lead you to a web scam website where a hacker might gain possession of your private information. Here is one of many articles on the subject describing the current problem in detail.
The takeaway lesson in this is that you must be wary of any email that you may have received that you were not expecting or any link on a web site that looks suspicious. The Internet is a wonderful tool, but as with many tools, you can hurt yourself if you're not careful.
If you ever have any questions about something you receive in your inbox or anything else that might be related to online security, please do not hesitate to give us a call at 877 397-7605 or contact us online. At 111 Web Studio, we are always available to answer questions about these and other issues.
