Does Google Know About You?

Who cares that you're an expert?

You have spent your career learning everything there is to know about your subject. You and your team are all subject matter experts and are even recognized as thought leaders by your peers. Why is it that search engines don't seem to know that about you? When your question gets asked of Google, you know you're the answer. Does Google?

First of all, no matter how good you are at what you do, search engines don't really care about that because they don't work for you; they work for the person who types something into the search box. If they make that person happy, they know that person is coming back tomorrow when another queston arises.

Search engines are really good at matching up questions with those who can best answer them. That's why we all use them in the first place. Naturally, Google should list you as the answer to the questions your potential customers are asking, shouldn't they? Of course! So how can you make that happen?

How does Google do it?

As it turns out, search engines only have one hammer in their tool box for finding the right answers and that's their search spiders. These spiders crawl the web looking for content so they can bring it home, grind it up in their algorithms to match it up with questions and then provide the right answers (hopefully you!). So from your perspective, content for those spiders is clearly the key to letting Google and other search engines know that you are a subject matter expert or thought leader in your field. To do that, your content has to be relevant to the question that was asked, making you a subject matter expert in their eyes. It also should be unique to you which makes you a thought leader, too.

To be listed on the first page of Google, Google has to know that you will deliver one of the best answers to the searcher's query. They must have found your unique, relevant content and determined your authority from that. So the key is publishing it and syndicating it in such a way that they can find it easily. Once they know all about you and what you have to say, they will send you the people who are searching for you.

What can you do?

There are several things you can do to change the way Google thinks about you. Good SEO requires the use of several tools all coordinated together to create a buzz about you and your knowledge of your subject.

Create promotions and campaigns! These will expand your audience, drive sales, spread a message or create a buzz about you and your site.
